What is DNS? In its most simple form, DNS (Domain Name System) translates domain and host names into IP addresses that computers can understand. 

DNS automatically converts the names we type in our web browser's address bar to the IP addresses of the servers hosting those sites. Eg. "google.com" actually gets interpreted as the IP address "74.125.233.96" so your machine knows where to go looking for the server hosting your request.

Why is DNS Important?

Simply put, without DNS, the internet and all related online services such as email etc would stop working. Our web browsers would not be able to find the addresses of our favourite websites and email would just bounce around in "cyberspace" as it would not be able to find the server it was meant to be delivered to.

What is DNS Propagation?

DNS propagation is the time it takes for all DNS servers worldwide to update the changes made to DNS records. For example, when DNS changes are made (like switching hosting providers or switching from an old website to a new one) every DNS server in the world needs to update its records of what IP address is associated with a domain. This propagation time can be anything from a few minutes up to 72 hours.

What are the Risks to your Business?

Uptime. If your DNS server goes down, all traffic stops, communication grinds to a halt and due to the nature of DNS propagation, it could take hours or days for these services to come back online.

It is imperative that your DNS servers are available 100% of the time and that changes made to your DNS records are rapidly propagated accross the internet. If for example your mail server fails and you quickly have to set up a new server, the speed at which your new server's IP address is propagated across the internet via DNS can determine the amount of downtime suffered.
